Tap Tempo

Tap the button or hit the spacebar in time with the music. The more taps, the more accurate the reading. Works for figuring out an unknown track, a reference, or something stuck in your head.

Averages your last 8 taps, so the reading stays accurate even if the tempo drifts. Keep tapping to refine it.

The math

BPM = 60,000 ÷ average gap between taps (ms)

Each tap records a timestamp. The tool measures the milliseconds between consecutive taps, averages them across your recent taps, and divides into 60,000. Averaging is what makes it accurate: a single interval carries all your timing jitter, but the mean of eight taps smooths it out. Stop tapping for a couple of seconds and it resets, ready for a new track.

In practice

Tap for at least four beats, ideally eight, before trusting the number, since the first two or three taps are always rough. Tap on the beat you feel most strongly, usually the kick; if a track feels halftime, you may find yourself tapping at half or double the "real" tempo, which is fine, just double or halve the result to match convention. Once you've got the BPM, the delay and reverb calculators turn it into usable timing values for your own production.
